A castle made to impress

It was built by the Marquises of Huxelles in the early seventeenth century to show their power and prestige: wide moat, turrets, high rusticated basement, gunports and drawbridge, the castle was made to impress. It has succeeded to this day.

The lifestyle of the nobility in the 17th century

The interior staircase « vide à la moderne » is copied from the one which existed at the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. Some 20 m high and 9 m wide, it seduced by the breadth of its perspectives, the beautiful play of light and harmony of its lines.

The famous "Gilded Rooms" provide the most brilliant and authentic testimony on the lifestyle of the French nobility in the early seventeenth century.
Painted, carved and gilded ceiling to floor, these apartments dazzle with their full colors and refinement of detail. Furniture, paintings and tapestries add to the accuracy of evocation.

During the Belle Epoque, a director of the Monte Carlo Opera was the owner of the chateau. He modified the styles to accommodate Byzantine, Renaissance, Louis XIV rooms, where one can still evoke his famous guests, Chaliapine, Caruso, Jules Massenet, Cécile Sorel.

Restoring the chateau, with authenticity

Long abandoned, the castle has been restored from 1980 on with full respect for its authenticity. The main tourist guides (Green Guide, The Backpacker, etc..) pay homage to this ‘diligent maintenance, making it a capital attraction’.

The gardens have been recreated over 11 hectares: flowerbeds, box maze, aviary, groves, theatre, garden, fountains and water features constitute the "pleasure garden", now listed among the finest in France.
